Are you an employee of the BC Public Service with a BC Student Loan? Considering applying for a position with the provincial government? You should know about the Pacific Leaders B.C. Loan Forgiveness program.

In a nutshell, as a BC Public Service employee you can apply to have the BC portion of your student loan forgiven. Visit the program link for more information.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/careers-myhr/all-employees/career-development/pacific-leaders/bc-loan-forgiveness

Eligibility for Loan Forgiveness: (see link for details)

  • Employed full or part-time with the BC Public Service
  • Have completed your probation
  • Your Canada-BC student loan is in “good standing”

The process is quite speedy. Just make sure to keep making your regular payments while your application is being processed. On approval, 1/3 of your remaining BC loan is forgiven. And as long as you remain eligible for the program, the remainder of the BC portion will be forgiven over the next two years.

If you are currently or are considering a career with the provincial government, this is an outstanding program to be aware of!

Office Clerk, a 4 month certificate program, covers all the most often listed skills for BC government positions. MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access (database), Office and Communication Skills and Typing!

Although we wouldn’t recommend applying for Student Aid with the idea that loan forgiveness may be on the horizon for you, it’s something to keep in mind, especially when applying for jobs. Does the employer offer loan forgiveness or repayment programs? Do they have yearly budgets for education or scholarships and awards? And most importantly, will the job you are seeking offer enough compensation to ensure you can comfortably repay your student loan?

If you have any questions about how StudentAid works and how to apply, please contact your local Academy of Learning Academic Advisor!
